Why Accountability Matters, And Ryan Lochte Shouldn’t

Ryan Lochte is 32, and has competed in 4 Olympic Games. He’s the second most winning swimmer in history. He’s never grown up. He’s never going to hear the end of it.

He and his buddies went out, got juiced up, realized they screwed up, and decided to fabricate an incident to cover up what actually happened.

Look, people have actually been mugged and killed in Rio during the Olympics. Rumor is these guys are being given a shakedown for cash to avoid prosecution. There are plenty of seedy things going on in Rio already, you don’t need to toss fake fodder into the mess.

What I am happy to finally see when it comes to Lochte, and his crew, is people expect accountability. It’s not being swept aside as a, “Boys will be boys.”

Usually, I try not to form a public opinion about the choices of others. It’s really not our place to judge, but this guy always rubbed me the wrong way that I made up a word to describe him years ago: Douchecanoe. Ya know because he’s a douche bag that’s in water. That’s mean to say, and I’m sorry. I was young and stupid when I did it. Lochte is 32, and has zero excuse.

It’s nice to see other media taking the same stance. Maybe we’re turning a corner. Maybe we’re just waiting for a better story to come along. Maybe we all just need a laugh.
