When I was 13, I decided I wanted to play guitar, because it would make me cool.
I had almost everything I needed: really bad poetry snippets, the ‘misunderstood musician’ attitude, and a whole bunch of Converse with Paramore lyrics written on the sides. I was just missing the actual guitar.
I only had two problems.
One: I had absolutely no idea how to play guitar.
Two: I was broke, because babysitting occasionally only gets you so far.
The first problem could be fixed. There was YouTube, and Guitar for Dummies, and I had the entire summer to figure out what I was doing. But money was its own problem.
Reverb has graciously put together a list of the best guitars for beginners – cheaper options that are still good quality and easy to play for those who are just starting out. I wish I’d had this for reference when I needed it.
Topping their list is the Yamaha FG700S/FG800, due to its smaller price tag (New, these guitars fall just short of $200). Also on the list are the Taylor GS mini, which is a smaller size for kids and beginners who aren’t used to handling a guitar, and the Seagull S6, because they provide a unique sound and are very easy to get used for a cheaper price.
If you ask me, getting your first guitar is a big deal, and any guidance is helpful.
As for me, I actually wound up getting a Yamaha from Guitar Center, and as all ‘misunderstood teenagers’ did, I covered it in Zumiez stickers and waited for my cool factor to rise.
