I’m sure by now we all know who Grace Vanderwaal is.

In case you don’t know, she is not Taylor Swift.

The 12-year-old singer-songwriter took the America’s Got Talent stage on Tuesday night, armed with a ukulele and some original lyrics, and sang her little tween heart out.

As expected, America went crazy.

But it’s not her actual performance that has people freaking out. It’s Simon Cowell’s comparison between Grace and Taylor Swift that seems to be the main focus of all of her media coverage. Every news article about her performance includes some mention of Taylor Swift in the headline. Despite Grace’s physical resemblance to Taylor Swift, she sounds absolutely nothing like her.

So, why are the judges comparing them? Because Grace plays an instrument, looks cute on stage, and writes her own music. When did that suddenly mean “Taylor Swift”?

Taylor Swift is a very successful artist, and there’s no denying that. But despite all the heavy emphasis on her songwriting and her ability to play an instrument, she is not the only person in the music industry who does those things.

Grace Vanderwaal should be able to be herself. This girl is obviously talented, so why can’t we let her be talented without trying to label her as a sequel to somebody else? America is going to miss out on so much of her talent if that’s how we look at her.
