The State That Loves Candy
Almost every state bought more Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups than ANYTHING else last October. (Here’s the map.) There were 10 exceptions. NINE of them bought more Peanut M&M’s than anything else: Texas . . . Hawaii . . . Montana . . . Idaho . . . Utah . . . South Dakota . . . Nebraska . . . Iowa . . . and Minnesota. The last remaining state, Rhode Island, has Sour Patch Kids as the #1.
There’s also a map of every state’s “TYPE.” The one candy they go crazy for . . . and buy way more of than everyone else in the country. For example, Montana is buying HI-CHEW at +616% above the national average. It’s also popular in Washington state, Oregon, and Alaska. And Louisiana is seriously into Tootsie Pops (+141%). They’re also big in Michigan, Alabama, South Carolina, and Delaware. Here are some other state’s favorites, relative to the rest of the country: Sour Patch Kids: New York, Florida, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, and Rhode Island. Skittles: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Georgia. Twizzlers: North Dakota, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Maryland. Haribo Goldbears: California, Hawaii, and also Washington D.C. M&M’s: Iowa, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Swedish Fish: Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Snickers: Kansas and Mississippi. Hershey’s Milk Chocolate: Virginia and North Carolina. Candy Corn: Colorado and Wyoming.
Haunts For Hire
Now there are people and small businesses in most areas that will handle your decorations for you . . . for a price, of course. You can hire people to deck out your porch in pumpkins to prepare for trick-or-treaters. A woman in Texas named Heather Torres has a small business called Porch Pumpkins, which charges between $350 and $1,650 to do this for people. She does more than 1,300 homes per year . . . and the packages don’t even involve carving intricate jack-o-lanterns, they’re just regular pumpkins. Heather started the business back in 2020, and one report says the company rakes in over $100K per year, despite mainly operating across the fall months. And she also sells “coaching sessions” to help other people around the country start THEIR porch pumpkin “concierge” business.
Would You Walk through A Cemetary?
A new poll online asked, “You are asked to cross a large cemetery . . . in the middle of the night. What do you take with you?” (And sadly, “A friend who’s slower than you” was NOT one of the options.) (???)
64% said they’d do it with a LIGHT: A flashlight, a headlamp, or a torch.
10% said they’d do it with a WEAPON: A gun, a knife, or a club of some kind.
1% said they’d do it with a RELIGIOUS SYMBOL: A cross, or holy water.
17% said they’d do it without ANYTHING. No big deal.
And 6% said they would REFUSE to do it, no matter what they had.
You can usually tell what’s popular by what people wear for Halloween. “Reader’s Digest” put together a list of the most popular Halloween costume for every year from 1950 to 2005.
1953: Mickey Mouse
1954: Batman
1957: Frankenstein’s Monster
1965: Sonny Bono and Cher
1967: Morticia Addams from “The Addams Family”
1969: Astronaut
1971: Willy Wonka
1975: Dr. Frank-N-Furter from “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”
1978: Michael Myers from “Halloween”

1984: Madonna

2002: “Spider-Man”
2005: Darth Vader
The Other 52% Of Attention Seekers!
47% of people say the possibility of becoming somebody’s viral “online content” has reduced their ability to “relax and be themselves in public.”According to a new poll, 47% of people say the possibility of becoming “online content” has reduced their ability to “relax and be themselves in public.” 31% say they avoid “showing strong emotions or opinions” . . . 30% avoid “dancing” . . . and 29% avoid “acting silly or telling jokes.” Gen Z’ers are most likely to be worried about it . . . possibly because they’re the most aware of how ANYTHING can gain traction on TikTok.
And there are ramifications. The fear of going viral is influencing social participation across generations . . . with about 20% of people overall admitting they have avoided a social gathering with friends, or bars and nightlife, just because they don’t want “an unwanted viral moment.”
If you’re in a happy relationship, would it matter if your partner wasn’t “THE ONE”?
In a new survey, 20% of people in relationships say they don’t believe their partner is their “one true love.”
The average person THINKS they have found “the one” TWICE . . . before realizing they were wrong. 33% say they’ve been wrong even more than that.
And 17% believe there could be multiple soulmates in a lifetime . . . so there’s more to discover than just ONE needle in a haystack.
Gen X is the generation most likely to believe in ONE soulmate, while Gen Z is the most open-minded about the love connections who might be out there.
The average single person has not been on a “good date” for nearly one-and-a-half YEARS, and the top hurdles are: “Ghosting” culture . . . social media setting unrealistic expectations . . . and dates not matching their online profiles.
A new poll asked people, “What is your biggest regret in life most related to?”.
22% said “I don’t have any big regrets.” Which is a GOOD thing, I guess.
15% said their biggest regret is related to “romantic relationships.”
10% said “career or work.”
8% said “family relationships.”
7% said “money.”
6% said “education.”
5% said “children.”
4% said “friendships.”
4% said “health.”
And 8% said “something else.”

1. Tour merch. T-shirts, tour jackets, and other stuff from bands and artists.
2. iPhones. They can be really valuable if they’re still sealed, which would be strange to have, but even your used ones could be “well worth holding onto.”
3. iPods. Believe it or not, kids these days think old iPods are super hip.
4. Gaming Consoles. Like a Nintendo 64, especially if it’s in pristine condition.
5. First Editions. Like the original run of the “Harry Potter” books. As usual, the real money is in the mint condition copies, but ANY original is cool.
6. Pokémon Cards. This one is obvious. And your old collection may have a few unexpectedly-rare gems.
7. Tamagotchi. The “virtual pets” that were all the rage 20 to 30 years ago.
8. Lego Sets. Also not shocking, but you may not think about the old ones in your basement being worth something.
9. DVDs. Physical media is booming once again . . . with interest in CDs, vinyl LPs, Blu-rays, and DVDs all leading the way. Everyone has an old copy of “The Matrix” . . . but the less common titles and box sets may be sought after.
10. VHS. This is hard to believe . . . because even VHS players can be hard to find anymore . . . but supposed

Know A Conversational Narcissist?
“Conversational narcissism” is when someone turns every conversation back to themselves. A professor of psychiatry said it’s like a game of catch where one person never throws the ball back. Here are the biggest signs experts say to watch for:
1. The “Shift Response” . . . It’s where you share something, and they immediately shift it to themselves. No follow up questions, just right back to talking about them.
2. The “Pretending to Listen” Look . . . You can tell they’re not really listening. They’re just waiting for your mouth to stop moving so they can jump in.
3. The “Constant One-Upper” . . . This person is the worst. Whether you have good news or bad news, they’ll always top it.
If you’re ever unsure, just ask yourself this one question: Do you feel drained after? Because if you walk away feeling exhausted or unheard, that’s a big clue.
But experts say it’s not always ego that drives conversational narcissism. Sometimes it’s just nerves or insecurity.

But couples with fewer bedtime gaps tend to be happier together. That extra “me-time” might be nice for unwinding . . . but the report found that couples with fewer bedtime gaps tend to be happier together. And “very happy” couples go to bed together about four times per week. 71% of couples who are BOTH night owls . . . and 78% of couples who are BOTH early birds . . . say they’re “very happy” in their relationship. That’s compared to 59% of couples with one night owl and one early bird. There was a difference based on age, though. Younger couples find it more important to lessen the bedtime gap, while it matters less to older folks.

It’s always the Tuesday before Valentine’s Day. It’s basically when people realize they haven’t made plans, and don’t want to waste the money. The site Illicit Encounters got the term trending in 2015. A survey found around one in four people have broken up with someone the week before Valentine’s Day. “Star” magazine talked to a matchmaker who says it’s even more pronounced with NEW relationships. Congrats, Your Not Really Fired, But You Gotta Go
Companies are so passive aggressive now. A poll by the site Resume Builder found 38% of companies lay people off instead of firing them . . . just to avoid hurting people’s FEELINGS. 80% of bosses said their company has laid someone off in the past year when they could have fired them for cause. Sometimes it’s out of kindness, like to avoid hurt feelings or help out with severance. But the #1 reason they do it is more self-serving .
1. To maintain company morale. 62% of bosses cited it as a reason. So, we react better if we think our friend got laid off because the money just wasn’t there.
2. To avoid wrongful termination lawsuits. A close second at 59%.
3. To help the person out with a severance package, 54%. So, that one’s nice.
4. To avoid hurting their feelings, 38%. The old line, “You know I think you’re great. Corporate just gave me no choice.”
According to the poll, layoffs that aren’t REALLY layoffs are more common than you’d think. Half of the bosses polled said at least 75% of layoffs their company made in the past year weren’t really about cutting costs.
